Comments let your team discuss a published dashboard on the dashboard itself. Start a thread about the whole dashboard or about one chart. Other people can reply to it, react to it, and resolve it when the question is answered. Mention a teammate with @ to send them a notification.
An admin must turn on comments for your account before the Comments button appears. See Turn it on.

Opening the panel

Open a published dashboard and click Comments in the dashboard header. The button shows the number of unresolved threads. Its tooltip reads Show comments or Hide comments. The panel opens on the right side of the dashboard. Drag its edge to make it wider or narrower. Click Comments again to close it.

Threads and replies

To start a thread, type in the box that reads Start a thread… and click Comment. You can also press Enter to post. Press Shift+Enter to add a new line. To reply, type in the Reply… box under a thread and click Reply. Replies are one level deep: you reply to a thread, not to another reply. The newest thread is at the top. Replies inside a thread are in the order they were posted, oldest first. A new reply does not move its thread to the top. Comments are plain text. Markdown and other formatting are shown as typed.

Resolving threads

The panel has two tabs: Open and Resolved. New threads are on the Open tab. To resolve a thread, open the More actions (⋯) menu on its first comment and choose Resolve thread. The thread moves to the Resolved tab and shows who resolved it, for example Resolved by Ada. You can’t reply to a resolved thread or add reactions to it. To open it again, choose Re-open thread from the same menu. The thread goes back to the Open tab.

Comments on a chart

A thread can be about one chart instead of the whole dashboard. Open the chart tile’s menu (⋮) and choose Add comment. The item shows the number of unresolved threads on that chart. The panel opens and shows only that chart’s threads, and the box reads Start a thread on …. To change which threads the panel shows, use the picker at the top of the panel. Choose All threads to see every thread on the dashboard, or choose one chart. In the list, a thread about a chart shows the chart’s name:
  • A chart without a title shows as Untitled chart.
  • A chart that was removed from the dashboard shows as Removed chart. Its threads stay on the dashboard and you can still read them. If the chart comes back to the dashboard, its threads attach to it again.

Editing and deleting

To change your comment, open its More actions (⋯) menu and choose Edit. An edited comment shows the edited mark. To delete a reply, choose Delete. To delete a whole thread, choose Delete thread on its first comment. This also deletes all the replies in the thread. Cube asks you to confirm, and you can’t undo a delete.

Reactions

To react to a comment, click Add reaction and choose one of six reactions: 👍 ✅ 👀 ❤️ 🎉 😀. This is a fixed set; you can’t add other emoji. Each reaction shows how many people added it. Hover a reaction to see who added it. Click a reaction to add yours, or click it again to remove it. Reactions do not send notifications.

Mentions

To mention a teammate, type @ in a comment and start typing their name. Cube shows a list of the users in your account, with each user’s name and email. Your own entry is marked (you). Choose a person to add the mention. In the posted comment, the mention is highlighted, and a mention of you has a different color. The person you mention gets a notification in their in-app inbox, with a link to the comment. Cube does not send mentions by email. Only a person you choose from the list is mentioned. If you type @ and a name without choosing from the list, it stays plain text and sends no notification. When you edit a comment, only the people you add get a notification. You don’t get a notification when you mention yourself.

Linking to a comment

To share a link to a comment, open its More actions (⋯) menu and choose Copy link. Cube copies the link and shows Link copied. When someone opens the link, the dashboard opens with the Comments panel open. The panel switches to the tab that has the comment, scrolls to it, and highlights it for a short time.

Permissions

Only the author of a comment can edit or delete it. People who can edit the workbook can resolve any thread, and the author of a thread can resolve it too. To learn about access levels, see Share content.

Turn it on

Go to Admin → Settings → Dashboard Comments and turn on Allow comments on dashboards. This setting is off by default and applies to the whole account. This setting controls comments in the Cube app only. Embedded dashboards have their own setting, Allow comments on embedded dashboards. When you turn the setting off, the Comments button and panel disappear and nobody can add comments, replies, or reactions. Cube does not delete existing threads. They come back when you turn the setting on again. If your account uses Audit Log, it records the text of every comment that is posted or edited.
